Praise House. As small places of worship built on plantations during slavery, Praise Houses still serve an important spiritual role in the Gullah community today. Members of the community, like Mary Rivers Legree, are working to protect the remaining praise houses, and ensure that outsiders acknowledge and respect their value.
Praise house definition is - a small meetinghouse usually in the southeastern U.S. where religious services consisting mainly of song are held mostly during week-nights as a supplement to Sunday church services.
One school of thought has it that the name “Praise House” is really a latter day version of the Gullah phrase “pray’s house”. Certainly the original intent was a house of prayer, as the planters would send a travelling preacher around to the praise houses on a regular basis.
