By that standard, this cinematic version of the Snow White tale is one of the best ever as it relies on a psychological take and a real understanding of the dangers of Medieval Europe but at the same time retains the magic of fairy tales in a believable way. Snow White is the beloved daughter of a lord whose mother dies giving birth to her.

ReplyDeleteWeaver is clearly having a great time as the not-so-wicked stepmother who eventually becomes a vengeful witch. Especially for a fairy tale, the characters are complex and not necessarily always likable; even Lilli (who is never called "Snow White") has a hard edge, and her "Prince Charming" is a bitter, scarred commoner.

ReplyDeleteWeaver's portrayal of the mad, jealous Queen is a delight to watch as she makes her believably sympathetic. The girl playing Lili was good too. She was a very pretty and innocent "Snow White", but I mostly liked how imperfect she was. Disney's Snow White is unbearably pure, chaste, innocent and perfectly angelic.
